Why experienced pilots fail the Advanced exam
They study the aircraft instead of the airspace. The Advanced RPAS exam is 50 questions in 60 minutes with an 80% pass mark. Most of it is aviation general knowledge — airspace classes, METAR and TAF decoding, density altitude, wake turbulence, human factors — rather than anything to do with operating a drone. Pilots who fly every week get caught out by it.
If you have been flying for years, the temptation is to skim the regulations and trust your experience. That approach works for the Basic exam. It does not work for Advanced, which pulls from the same body of knowledge as a manned-aviation ground school, compressed and adapted for remotely piloted operations.
This guide was built from the other direction. Rather than starting with the drone and adding rules, it starts with the syllabus the exam is drawn from and works through it in the order that makes it stick.

What format is the guide delivered in?
A 44-page PDF. After payment you receive an immediate download link by email. It reads well on a tablet and prints cleanly if you prefer paper — the checklists in particular are designed to be printed and carried.
Is it current with the 2025 and 2026 rule changes?
Yes. The Revised 2026 Edition reflects the RPAS amendments that came into force in two phases — 1 April 2025 and 4 November 2025. That includes the new Level 1 Complex certificate, medium drone operations from 25 to 150 kg, and extended visual line-of-sight privileges for Advanced certificate holders. Guides published before November 2025 describe a rulebook that no longer applies.
Will this guarantee I pass?
No, and be sceptical of anyone who claims otherwise. What it does is cover the full general-knowledge syllabus the exam draws from, in the depth the Advanced exam requires. Pair it with practice exams and the official Transport Canada material — both of which the exam preparation chapter points you to — and you'll walk in prepared.
Do I still need a flight review?
Yes. The Advanced certificate requires both the written exam and an in-person flight review with a Transport Canada-recognised reviewer. You must pass the written exam first. We conduct flight reviews if you'd like to do both with us.
Is it useful if I only need the Basic certificate?
Yes, though it's more than you strictly need. The guide explains all three certificate tiers and their operating limits. The meteorology, airspace, and human factors chapters are pitched at Advanced depth — which makes Basic feel straightforward by comparison, and leaves you ready if you upgrade later.
Can I get a refund?
