How to Pass the Advanced RPAS Exam in Canada
The Small Advanced Operations exam is 50 multiple-choice questions in 60 minutes, with an 80% pass mark, written online through Transport Canada's Drone Management Portal. You must be 16 or older. Most of it is aviation general knowledge — airspace, meteorology, human factors — not drone operation. Budget 15 to 30 hours of study weighted heavily toward weather and airspace, and don't assume flying experience will carry you.
Why experienced pilots fail this exam
There is a particular kind of candidate who fails the Advanced exam. They've been flying commercially for three or four years and know their aircraft intimately, so they treat the exam as a formality standing between them and a certificate they've already earned in practice.
The problem is that the exam isn't really about drones. Strip out the questions that mention an RPA at all and you are left with something closely resembling a manned-aviation ground school test — airspace classification, weather systems, density altitude, wake turbulence, load factor, human performance. Ten thousand accident-free flights teach you none of that directly.
The Basic exam rewards operational familiarity. The Advanced exam does not.
What the exam actually covers
Transport Canada draws Advanced exam questions from the knowledge requirements in TP 15263. In practice the weighting falls roughly into these areas:

A study sequence that works
Order matters more than hours. Study in this sequence and each block reinforces the last.
1. Start with airspace, not regulations
Airspace structure is the spine everything else hangs from. Until you understand what Class C actually is and why it needs an authorization, the regulations about where you may fly are just arbitrary rules to memorise. Learn the classes, learn what each requires of you, and learn to read the Designated Airspace Handbook.
2. Then meteorology — and give it real time
This is where most failures live. METAR and TAF decoding is a mechanical skill: it feels impossible for about two hours and then it clicks permanently. Density altitude requires you to actually do the calculation a few times rather than read about it. Icing, stability, and frontal systems need conceptual understanding, not memorisation.
If you allocate your study time evenly across all subject areas, you will underinvest here. Weight it deliberately.
3. Theory of flight and systems
Lighter going, and some of it will be familiar from operating experience. Wake turbulence, critical angle of attack, and load factor in turns are the reliably-tested items. Lithium polymer battery handling is heavily represented, and it's easy marks.
4. Human factors last
Largely common sense expressed in aviation vocabulary. Learn the frameworks by name — IM SAFE, CRM, threat and error management — because questions test the terminology as much as the concept.
5. Practice exams until you're consistently above 85%
The 80% pass mark means you can miss ten questions. That is less margin than it sounds under time pressure. Aim to sit consistently above 85% on practice material before booking, so a couple of surprises don't sink you.
On timing: 60 minutes for 50 questions is 72 seconds each. That's comfortable if you know the material and brutal if you're reasoning from first principles. The exam is open-book in the sense that nobody is watching, but looking things up costs time you don't have. Know it before you sit down.
After the exam: the flight review
Passing the written exam does not give you Advanced privileges. You also need to pass an in-person flight review with a Transport Canada-recognised reviewer, and you must have the written pass before you can book it. The review assesses pre-flight preparation, in-flight handling, regulatory knowledge, and post-flight procedures — and the most common stumbling block is an unconvincing pre-flight briefing rather than anything to do with flying.

Common questions
How long should I study?
Most candidates need 15 to 30 hours of focused study, weighted toward meteorology and airspace. Candidates with a manned aviation background typically need less. Practical flying experience doesn't meaningfully reduce the requirement — the exam tests aviation general knowledge, not piloting skill.
What happens if I fail?
Transport Canada requires a 24-hour wait between attempts, and each attempt carries the same fee. There's no limit on attempts. Use the gap properly — a failed attempt tells you which areas were weak, and re-sitting immediately without addressing them usually produces the same result.
Do I need the ROC-A radio certificate?
The exam tests radiotelephony knowledge regardless. You need an actual ROC-A if you'll be transmitting on aeronautical frequencies — which applies if you operate at or near aerodromes with a mandatory frequency or aerodrome traffic frequency. Many Advanced operators get it for this reason.
Is a paid course worth it?
It depends how you learn. The material is entirely learnable from written sources, and a CA$600 course doesn't contain knowledge that a good written guide lacks. What courses buy you is structure and someone to ask. If you're disciplined, a well-organised guide plus practice exams gets you there for a fraction of the cost.
