How it works in Cambridge

The Advanced RPAS flight review is the in-person practical assessment that completes your Advanced certificate — you must already hold a passing grade on the written exam. It runs about an hour: pre-flight briefing, aircraft and document check, a short flight on your own aircraft, and an honest debrief. Here's the full walkthrough of what to expect.

Cambridge sits close enough to the Region of Waterloo International Airport (CYKF) that the first job of your site survey is establishing exactly where your site stands relative to its control zone — some of the city is affected, much of it isn't, and "I checked and here's how" is precisely what a reviewer wants to hear. The Grand and Speed river corridors also make bystander and emergency-landing planning genuinely interesting here rather than theoretical.

CA$275, travel included. I come to you or to a suitable site we agree on — no fixed test centre, no travel surcharge anywhere in Cambridge. The preparation guide is included free when you book, and if the briefing makes clear you're not ready, I'd rather reschedule than take your money.

Three questions Cambridge candidates ask

Where do we actually meet?

A site in or around Cambridge that fits your briefed operation — I'll propose options with clean airspace when you book, or we can use a site you have permission to fly.

Whose drone do I fly?

Your own. The review assesses you on the aircraft you actually fly — it must be registered with Transport Canada, marked with its registration number, and airworthy.

How soon can I book?

Email with your exam pass and your location and I'll come back with dates — usually within a couple of weeks, weather depending. Booking sooner after your written exam is better; the knowledge is fresh.
